Ohio State’s biggest offseason addition is already fitting right in Columbus as many expected he would.
Sophomore S Caleb Downs is not only going to be one of the Buckeyes’ best players, but he’s going to be a versatile one too.
The former Freshman All-American spoke recently about how he’s been moving around different looks on the defense and how it has helped him out this spring.
“Every day I take reps at all three spots,”Downs Said. “It helps you understand and learn the defense from a new perspective. Being able to see the ball from the boundary safety, see the ball from the nickel spot, being able to see the ball from the dime. It helps you be able to see the whole game and understand everything that goes on around you.”
As a freshman at Alabama, Downs led the team in tackles with 107 and also recorded two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The Buckeyes were considered the runner-up for the No. 1 safety in the class of 2023 and he’s fitting right in now.
Lathan Ransom came back for another season and will be the opposite safety of Downs. Sonny Styles is poised to take over as a linebacker. The addition of Downs made that move a no-brainer.
Fans will get their first viewing of the new-look Buckeyes with Downs on the defense during the spring game on April 13 at noon ET.
