Ohio State’s run so far in the College Football Playoff has been further proof that Jeremiah Smith is a superstar and a special freshman that doesn’t come along often.

Through two games in the postseason, Jeremiah Smith has back-to-back 100-yard games and four touchdowns. In that time, the Buckeyes have blown past Tennessee and Oregon.

Smith has already shown that he is the best wide receiver in college football. Luckily for the Buckeyes, he will be in Columbus for two years after this season. However, one former Buckeye believes that Smith should only be out on the field for one more season.

“If he was my kid, I don’t know if he’s playing his third year in college. I don’t think he needs it,” said Cardale Jones on The Triple Option. “I think he pulls some type of Ja’Marr Chase [move] where I know its COVID year, and LSU is going through some things his third year before he was draft eligible. But we see it worked out for him and other guys who didn’t play their third year just getting through those three years so that they can be draft eligible.”

Smith has caught 70 passes for 1,224 yards and 14 touchdowns in 14 games. The star freshman is averaging 87 yards per game and that is just beyond impressive for a first-year college player. Smith has gone over 100 yards five times this year and was held under 50 yards receiving just twice.

From the get-go, Smith has been a star and the No. 1 wideout for the Buckeyes. Though Emeka Egbuka is expected to be a first-round pick come April in the NFL draft. Next season, Smith is set to be the top option again with Carnell Tate and Brandon Inniss back as the next top options.

Sitting out his junior year would be to protect himself from injury ahead of his jump to the NFL. This is all just Jones saying what he thinks Smith should do, not what he will actually do.

In the end, expect the phenom freshman to play three seasons in Columbus and break every receiving record the program has.
