Ohio State has had a tough road to the National Championship that they will play in tonight against Notre Dame.
The toughest matchup on paper was in the quarterfinal round against No. 1 Oregon. Ohio State took care of the Ducks, 41-21, to avenge one of their regular season losses.
In that loss back in October, Ducks HC Dan Lanning opted to take a 12-men on-the-field penalty in exchange for time to come off the clock. It was a loophole that would no longer work, but it did at the time for Oregon. Ohio State OC Chip Kelly took offense to that decision by Lanning.
When asked what the Buckeyes’ motivation was against Oregon as an offense, it was simple.
“I’ll tell you what, it was a unique message with our players: you can’t stop us with 11. You had to stop us with 12,” Kelly told reporters. “You saw the final results of 11 versus 11. So, that was a message to our team for the week leading up to the Rose Bowl that I think resonated really well with our guys.”
Ohio State put up 500 yards of offense against the Ducks and had the game in hand rather quickly. Ohio State’s offense cleared 40 points against Tennessee and Oregon, then scored 28 against Texas. Jeremiah Smith was the main catalyst in the first two games, then was held quiet against Texas, and that allowed Carnell Tate to lead the way.
If Ohio State is going to get it done against Notre Dame, it would be in their best interest to get their star freshman going again. Notre Dame is going to offer a great chance with man coverage, so Ohio State is going to have to be aggressive.
Expect the Buckeyes and Ducks to continue taking jabs at each other, as a new rivalry in the Big Ten looks to be alive.
