Ohio State not only has to replace their defensive coordinator, but they now have to replace their offensive coordinator as well.

Just a few days after it was made known that DC Jim Knowles was taking the same position at Penn State, news hit that OC Chip Kelly was making his way back to the NFL.

Kelly’s tenure with Ohio State lasted just one season and the Buckeyes won it all in his only go around. The commitment between Kelly and Ohio State was keener going to be long and we were always on borrowed time.

Chip Kelly going back to the NFL makes sense

The Las Vegas Raiders’ new offensive coordinator is no stranger to coaching in the NFL. Kelly was last in the NFL in 2016 when he was with the Philadephia Eagles and he was a head coach at the level from 2013-2016 between the Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.

Kelly was with UCLA as the head coach from 2018 until he became the OC at Ohio State. Leaving the head coaching job was an obvious sign that Kelly was trying to get back to the NFL. With the talent that Ohio State had on offense in 2024, there was no better place to flex play-calling abilities.

The life of a coach is much better in the NFL and there is no worry of having to travel and recruit in the pros. Kelly was out on the West Coast recruiting this past week for the Buckeyes.

Kelly is a talented play caller and he has shown that. Throughout his coaching career, he has proven to be an elite coordinator over being a good head coach. The Raiders will have a strong resume of coaching between Pete Carroll running things and Kelly calling the offense.

In 2025, Kelly is going to embark on his fifth season of NFL experience. Getting back to that level was always the trajectory and it worked out for the Buckeyes in the end as well. Now, the wiring game is on to see who the replacement is.
