Ohio State has been busy this week working to fill multiple coaching vacancies that popped up following the National Championship win.
Gone are both coordinators Jim Knowles and Chip Kelly, as well as offensive line coach Justin Frye. Ohio State made an intriguing addition to fill Frye’s spot, which you can read about here.
Ohio State filled the OC position from within by promoting wide receivers coach Brian Hartline to do the job. Ohio State’s top recruit just happens to be a wide receiver and he is feeling good about the move.
“I love this move. Coach Hartline knows how to develop receivers better than anyone, & now with him as OC I know he's going to put us receivers in the best position to dominate for sure,” Chris Henry Jr. said, via On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Hartline was already a co-offensive coordinator previously with Kelly calling the plays in 2024. Hartline was the offensive coordinator in 2023 with head coach Ryan Day calling plays but was demoted when Day gave up play-calling duties.
In 2025, Hartline is set to call plays for the first time as a coach, and Day will remain in the CEO role that he went into before 2024. Ohio State’s new quarterbacks coach is Billy Fassler, who received a promotion from within.
Henry Jr. is a five-star talent who has the potential to be the No. 1 player in the class of 2026. And it sounds as if he is already excited to see his position coach get a big promotion.
Ohio State opens its 2025 season with Texas, so Hartline’s offense will need to come out swinging right away in the fall against a strong defense.
