Former Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave hit the ground running in the NFL right away as a productive wideout with the New Orleans Saints. Olave is well on his way to his third straight 1,000-yard season to start his NFL career, but he has to stay healthy.

The former Buckeye suffered another concussion in Week 9 of the NFL season when he was attempting to catch a ball across the middle of the field from quarterback Derek Carr. Carolina Panthers safety Xavier Woods made an illegal hit that made it clear right away that Olave was hurt.

Olave was loaded onto a stretcher and a cart and then taken off the field. The Saints released a statement that Olave was taken to a local hospital but was later released.

The concussions are piling up for Chris Olave

Olave is only 24 years old and has five documented concussions dating back to 2020 at Ohio State. The star wideout had a concussion in each of his first two seasons in the NFL, then had another on Oct. 13 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now with another one, it does not take a doctor to know it is a bit of a worry.

Olave has had five concussions in the last four years and that is just diagnosed concussions, others could have slipped through detection. Concussions are traumatic to the brain and that is the risk that comes with playing tackle football. Still, trying to protect the head/neck area is an emphasis across all levels.

A while after the game, Olave posted on his X (Twitter) account that he is okay.

At Ohio State, Olave had 2,711 receiving yards over four seasons and 47 games played. The 6-foot-1 wide receiver caught 35 touchdowns while with the Buckeyes and is a great story from being just a three-star recruit at one time.

This season so far with the Saints, Olave has 400 yards and one touchdown in eight games. His best game so far was against Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers, where Olave had eight catches for 107 yards.

Olave is in the same situation as former Buckeye Denzel Ward. Two very good players that have had trouble staying away from concussions. Perhaps going forward the Guardian Cap could be something that Olave looks into.
