Ryan Day got the big target off his back this past season by the Ohio State Buckeyes winning a National Championship. It was a special run that Ohio State went on after losing to Michigan in the last game of the regular season.

Of course, the win over Notre Dame meant the most because it was the title game. However, the win over Oregon meant a ton to the Buckeyes too due to what happened earlier in the season.

Ohio State lost a heartbreaker, 32-31, to Oregon early in the regular season. It was a game that the Buckeyes probably should have won. When it mattered most, Ohio State handed Oregon a 41-21 loss in the College Football Playoff. Recently, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning elaborated on what went wrong.

“From a preparation standpoint, we probably (tried to) utilize too many things that helped us win the first time we beat them,” Lanning said, via Eleven Warriors. “Always be asking yourself the what ifs. Like, what if they’re getting to specific looks or moving guys that they didn’t in the past? Having a better plan for how they move (Jeremiah Smith) around more than they had in the past.”

Having a plan for that moving forward is necessary and applies to any team we play. There’s a lot of strong targets out there, but when they’re moving around guys that we’re expecting to be in different places, what’s the answer to that?”

Ohio State put up 500 yards of offense compared to Oregon’s 276 in the CFP matchup. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 31-0 lead and were up 34-8 at halftime. The game was decided early on when Oregon had no answer for Ohio State spreading the ball around to their playmakers.

Jeremiah Smith scored two first-half touchdowns and finished with seven catches for 187 yards. It wasn’t just the phenom freshman doing damage, Emeka Egbuka had a 42-yard touchdown in the first half and finished with five catches for 72 yards.

Ohio State’s offense held nothing back against Oregon in that game. Everything was on the table and they played free without any holdback. It was the kind of game that they put out there against Tennessee the week before, but it was more impressive due to Oregon being undefeated and ranked No. 1.

Now that Oregon is in the Big Ten, they’re going to continue to be a thorn in Ohio State’s side. Oregon is recruiting as well as anyone in the country and will continue to be a contender. Expect this kind of matchup to keep coming up in the future.
