The Ohio State Buckeyes seemingly erased the sting of their late-season loss to the Michigan Wolverines with a 42-17 victory over the Tennessee Vols in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday night.
Ohio State's dominant performance against Tennessee has ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy believing that the Buckeyes could be the team to beat the rest of the way in the playoff.
While reviewing the action from the first round of the playoff, McElroy said that he thinks if Ohio State plays against Oregon in the Rose Bowl the way they played against Tennessee in the first round, then the Buckeyes will advance to the semifinals of the playoff.
McElroy also pointed out that he thinks if Ohio State plays three more games like they played against Tennessee, then they'll bring the national championship back to Columbus.
"If we get this type of performance against Oregon, I think they'll beat the Ducks," said McElroy of Ohio State. "I'm just flat out telling you, I think the Ducks are really good. But now this game is going to be at a neutral site — a venue and a setting that Ohio State is really familiar with (Rose Bowl). They play like they played last night, that' Ohio State's game. And if they play like that three more times, Ohio State's going to win the national championship. I'm just going to tell you that."
Ohio State certainly looked like the team to beat on Saturday night. And I definitely agree with McElroy that they'll win it all if they play three more games at that same level.
But is that something this Ohio State team can do? Can they string together three more performances like what we saw against the Vols? Can they exact revenge against an Oregon team that they lost to earlier this season?
Nothing's a given in college football, but it seems like Ohio State is dialed in and ready to make a run. I'd be surprised if we see the Buckeyes slip up again this season. This feels like their tournament to win after that dominant showing against a pretty good Tennessee team.
