Entering the season, the expectations for the Ohio State Buckeyes were high in Columbus and all around the college football world. To this point the Buckeyes are 6-1 with a one-point loss to Oregon and Penn State awaits them.
The Buckeyes opened the season with Akron, Western Michigan, Marshall, and then a game at Michigan State. Ohio State was not challenged until their 32-31 loss to Oregon. By following it up with a 21-17 win over Nebraska, the Buckeyes opened themselves up to criticism.
Former Michigan Heisman trophy winner Desmond Howard took a shot at how the Buckeyes started the season recently.
"They didn't really know what they had early this season. You get a false impression of how great you are when you're going up and down the field against inferior opponents,” Howard said.
Howard taking shots at Ohio State is nothing new, he has done it for a while and it is no surprise given that he went to Michigan. He could be right in the end, or the Buckeyes could just be playing some bad ball for the moment.
“I thought coming out of the bye week we would see a better performance. But then, Nebraska gave them all they could handle too. To be honest, Nebraska talent-wise isn’t on the same level as Ohio State when you look at recruiting, when you look at the 20 million dollars they spent this offseason to bring the talent in.”
Penn State is the No. 3 team in the country and that is who awaits Ohio State. If the Buckeyes play like they did against the Cornhuskers, it could be a walkaway win for the Nittany Lions.
Ohio State is going to have to figure out left tackle and whether or not it will be Zen Michalaski starting in place of Josh Simmons (out for the season). The Buckeyes need to run the ball much better, something they have not done well since Week 6 against Iowa.
If Ohio State falls against Penn State, what Howard said could become a bigger talking point. For now, it is just a shot at Ohio State from a former Wolverine.
Ryan Day could be making a costly mistake that may help Penn State hand the Buckeyes their second loss
The Buckeyes should go a different route.
