Despite being 10-2 on the season and having all but locked up a berth in the College Football Playoff, the feeling around the Ohio State football program is not great.
Four straight losses to your rival will do that and the latest was the most disappointing. Being ranked No. 2 in the country, the Buckeyes had no business losing to a 6-5 Michigan team. With the loss, Ohio State failed to hit two of their goals this season. The second one was failing to reach the Big Ten Championship.
ESPN’s Paul Finebaum has never hidden his feelings about Ohio State and Ryan Day. When things are going bad, he calls them out. Now, Finebaum is ready for Day to be gone if the Buckeye fall head first again in the near future.
“The bottom line is he has to make a serious run, first-round knockout and I’d fire him on the field before he gets to the midfield,” Finebaum said. I still think he’d oughta go.”
Day is 66-10 as the head coach in Columbus, but his four losses to Michigan stick out like a sore thumb. Usually losing to Michigan meant that the season was over, but that is not the case this season with an expanded playoff format. Day and the Buckeyes have a chance to still win it all, even after the most disappointing loss in Day’s tenure.
“This guy has been a very good coach, he’s 66-10. But when you lose to your rival every single year for four straight, we’re talking about three revenge games and the same result happens, especially this year. It’s time to start packing.”
The College Football Playoff rankings get updated tonight and the Buckeyes will surely fall to the six or seven spot at best. Depending on how the games go this weekend, they could be hosting a playoff game later this month in Columbus.
Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork has already come out and said that Day is the coach at Ohio State. But if the Buckeyes fall short without much fight in the postseason, he may be rethinking that one.
