Following the National Championship win for Ohio State over Notre Dame, a number of Buckeyes had a decision to make.
The transfer portal remained open for five days for players to enter. Meanwhile, some players were already in the portal but decided to finish out the title run with Ohio State.
Now that the season has wrapped up, Buckeyes in the portal have been finding new homes. On offense, TE Patrick Gurd isn’t going too far and will join a couple of other former Buckeyes.
Gurd is joining former Buckeyes Joe Royer and Evan Pryor in Cincinnati with the Bearcats. Kye Stokes is another Buckeye transfer who is now with the Bearcats at safety. Gurd leaves Columbus after five seasons spent with the Buckeyes and will have a sixth season of eligibility.
The newest Bearcat was mainly a factor on special teams but did see spare time at tight end and full back during his Ohio State career. Gurd caught two passes for 15 yards over the last seasons in 88 total plays.
Going to Cinciantti worked out in a big way for Royer, who was a big part of the Bearcats’ offense last season. Royer caught 50 passes for 521 yards last season with Cincinnati after having just four catches with Ohio State in three seasons. Gurd will have a chance to have more playing time with Cincinnati as depth behind Royer.
Another former Buckeye that could soon find a home is DT Hero Kanu, who entered the portal after the win over Notre Dame. The majority of Ohio State’s portal players have figured out their future destinations.
Gurd was a longtime Buckeye and will have a National Championship ring for his efforts. Now, the graduate transfer will have one last chance at a bigger role in college.
