We are a week away from the National Championship between Ohio State and Notre Dame and some blows are already being thrown.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire has taken a shot at Will Howard that has come out of nowhere. It is an unprovoked shot that Howard can keep in the back of his mind heading into this game.

Not that anyone needs bulletin board material for this big of a stage, but it is there for the taking. Zaire took to X (Twitter) recently to take a shot at Howard’s ability to play quarterback.

“All the great QBs Ohio State has had the last 15 yrs and Howard is def the worst one by far and fans are trying to convince me that he’s gonna lead them to the chip?!?! Lmao ok I’d even take the OG Jalin Marshall at QB before Howard!!!!!!!!,” Zaire said on X.

Sure, Howard is not going to be the first-round quarterback like Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, or C.J. Stroud. However, he has proven to be the better quarterback in the National Championship matchup this season. Howard clears Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard as a complete quarterback, though Leonard holds the edge with his running ability.

Zaire is likely just a former Notre Dame player who has decided to be loud early in an act to be heard. Zaire played in 17 games over three years for the Fighting Irish, during that time he threw for 816 yards and six touchdowns while completing 59 percent of his passes.

Back in 2013, Zaire was the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the country from the Dayton, Ohio area. Ohio State brought in J.T. Barrett over Zaire from that class and it proved to be the right move for the Buckeyes, as Barrett played a part in the last National Championship the Buckeyes won in 2014.

Howard has played plenty fine with 40 total touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. The graduate transfer has become tougher at Ohio State and should cross the 4,000-yard mark against Notre Dame.

Who is to say why Zaire took the shot at Howard, it may be one he ends up regretting with the way that Howard has played as of late for the Buckeyes
