The Miami Hurricanes logged a big victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes just days ago, winning the Cotton Bowl 24-24 in the first College Football Playoff quarterfinal and prematurely ending the Buckeyes’ once-promising attempt to repeat as champions.

Now, one former Buckeye is heading south to join the Hurricanes for next season. Per Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports, defensive lineman Jarquez Carter has committed to Miami.

Former Ohio State DL Jarquez Carter is set to transfer to Miami

Carter was a big win in the class of 2025 for the Buckeyes over all of the Florida schools that were after the Sunshine State native. He was ranked the No. 83 overall player by Rivals out of Newberry, FL (Newberry High School).

As a true freshman, Carter played in six games and saw 51 defensive snaps. He logged one tackle during that time. Carter is a 6-foot-1, 288-pound defensive tackle who should be solid 3-tech depth at worst in 2025.

Ohio State and Carter spreading made sense for both sides. It’s been reported that the Buckeyes are trying to beef up on the interior with some bigger bodies on the interior that weigh north of 300 pounds. Ohio State proved that in the transfer portal by adding UCF DT John Walker and Alabama DT James Smith.

Carter’s role was limited in 2025 as a third stringer, and he should have a chance to leap as a sophomore. It looks like Carter is joining the team that ended Ohio State’s season, and while he is, the Hurricanes were after him hard in high school and this move makes a ton of sense.

Carter is a good fit with the Hurricanes, who will surely be looking to retool a defensive line that’s taking some hits after this year. Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain, Jr. will be off to the NFL. David Blay, Jr. is a fifth-year senior and Ahmad Moten, Sr. is also a potential NFL departee. Adding quality depth on the inside was important for Miami, and now they’ve got a Sunshine State talent to come in and fill that void.

All in all, it was a move that works out well for all parties. Even if the name on the jersey will make some Ohio State fans shake their heads at the moment.
