Former Ohio State OC Chip Kelly dealt tough news that makes his choice to leave Columbus look questionable
The NFL coaching world is a tough one and Chip Kelly was shown that Sunday night.
The Ohio State Buckeyes were faced with a major challenge immediately after winning the national championship last season. Not only were players making decisions about leaving for the NFL, but the Buckeyes also lost both of their coordinators.
Ohio State has replaced DC Jim Knowles and OC Chip Kelly effectively so far with Matt Patricia and Brian Hartline. Knowles leaving for Penn State was a shock to the program given how it unfolded, but Kelly returning to the NFL wasn’t a surprise, as that had long been his goal. However, Kelly’s jump back to the NFL has already taken a rough turn.
Chip Kelly being fired by the Raiders shows how fast things can move in the NFL
Just last winter, the Las Vegas Raiders made Kelly the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the league. Following the team’s 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Kelly was fired. Las Vegas is 2-9 on the season, and Kelly’s return to the NFL lasted only 11 games on Pete Carroll’s staff.
Kelly was terrific for the Buckeyes in his only season in Columbus in 2024. Ryan Day made the significant decision to give up play-calling duties, and he handed them to a veteran coach with extensive experience. Kelly was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013–2015 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. After five years as the head coach at UCLA, Kelly joined Ohio State as the offensive coordinator.
Kelly also had prior college experience at Oregon from 2007–2012 and before that at New Hampshire. His goal was to return to the NFL, and his performance at Ohio State in 2024 helped him achieve that. Unfortunately, with how poor the Raiders have been offensively this season, that move has already blown up on Kelly.
