The Ohio State Buckeyes are always a lightning rod for attention and criticism whenever there's news about the program. In the wake of winning its first national championship in a decade, head coach Ryan Day has been tasked with several difficult staff changes that have pulled him away from recruiting and preparation for next year.

This week, Day surprised everyone when former New England defensive coordinator and Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia as his new DC. Jim Knowles' departure from the role at Penn State was shocking enough, but Day took his time to find the next head coach for the defense. Patricia, who wasn't interviewed in this past NFL cycle, was an unexpected option.

Ohio State recruits are excited, and it didn't take long for a few former Buckeyes to speak out about the move. That includes former star linebacker Bobby Carpenter. Carpenter played under Patricia in New England in 2012.

Carpenter tweeted:

"For those Buckeye fans who don’t like the hire… for whatever reason-
Played for Matty P in New England… he’s a smart and measured as you’ll find. Great communicator and incredibly creative.
It didn’t work in Detroit as a HC… happens to a lot of coordinators… but he’s not hired at the HC so don’t worry about that."

He later added that players still matter more than coaches, and it should not be held against Patricia that the NFL no longer wants him. As he rightfully points out, Chip Kelly went from little NFL interest to landing a $6 million-a-year contract in one season.

This is likely a rehabilitation spot for Patricia, and his biggest red flag is his ability to build relationships, not call a scheme. That may be partly why Day also promoted Tim Walton to co-defensive coordinator.

Fellow former Buckeye Chimdi Chekwa also weighed in.

Overall, the former players are optimistic. I think there's no reason to panic right now. Patricia is clearly a bright-minded individual and can drop three Super Bowl rings on the table in front of recruits. This hire could blow up and prove to be the wrong one, but Day can pivot next year if he needs to.
