Ohio State is once again naming a new starting quarterback this fall, as Will Howard was a one-year solution from the transfer portal. Howard came in and helped the Buckeyes win a national championship—there’s nothing more they could have asked from the Kansas State transfer.

Howard’s draft story was a memorable one. He returned home to Pennsylvania and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers late in the draft.

Aaron Rodgers is set to be the starter for the Steelers, and it will be a valuable learning experience for Howard to sit behind him on the depth chart. The former Buckeye recently opened up about how things are going so far.

“I’m having a blast,” Howard said in a recent interview. “It’s my dream—it’s my childhood dream. I’m trying to remember that every day while also keeping it a business and taking care of business and executing. But at the end of the day, man, it’s fun, it’s football. I’m playing a game I’ve been playing since I was 7 years old, and I’m loving it.”

Will Howard is already working to improve the one knock on him coming out

Howard is a 6-foot-4 quarterback who has all the physical traits you could want—except for elite arm strength, which was the main knock against him during the draft process. It’s something he’s been focusing on improving.

“I think the thing I’ve been focusing on most through this offseason and training camp is just throwing the ball through people,” Howard explained. “I think a big knock on me through the draft process was my arm strength, and I don’t necessarily agree with that. I think sometimes I take some velocity off the ball—maybe to place it or be too accurate—but I’ve been trying to focus on throwing the ball through people.

“Even if there’s a guy wide open, still putting velocity on that thing. Keeping all my cleats in the ground and using the ground and my power to really get everything on every throw that I can.”

If Howard can continue to develop his arm strength and gain valuable experience behind Rodgers, this season could prove to be the perfect situation. Sitting as QB3 behind Rodgers and Mason Rudolph may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the former Buckeye.
