Ohio State needed Will Howard last season—and Will Howard needed Ohio State. The Buckeyes wouldn’t have won a National Championship without the Kansas State transfer, and in turn, Howard significantly boosted his NFL Draft stock.
After four years at Kansas State, Howard performed well in his final season of eligibility with the Buckeyes. He was ultimately selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Now, Howard finds himself in a unique position: learning behind future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers appears ready to mentor the rookie.
“Will’s a good kid. Thought he looked good today,” Rodgers said on Tuesday. “I’m gonna be with him every single day and every single meeting. I’m gonna help him out as much as I can.”
Having the chance to learn behind a quarterback with 20 years of NFL experience and nearly 63,000 career passing yards is invaluable. Rodgers was one of the league’s top passers for over a decade, and Howard now has an opportunity to study how he approaches the game, on and off the field.
Howard likely won’t see the field in 2025 unless injuries strike or things go off track for the Steelers. But as a late-round draft pick, he’ll have time to develop and possibly become the team’s future at quarterback—if he proves himself. The first thing Howard has to do is make the team, as he is not a lock to make it as a sixth-round selection.
Not every quarterback lands in a situation like this. It could be a real advantage for Howard. Now, it’s up to him to make the most of it.
