If you are a wide receiver, it is hard to turn down going to Ohio State when you have the opportunity. The rate at which the Buckeyes put wideouts in the NFL is very high under Brian Hartline.
Last year it was Marvin Harrison Jr. who was a first round pick and the year before that it was Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
In April, Emeka Egbuka is set to be the next Ohio State wide receiver that is a first-round pick, which he should be. Former Ohio State QB Kyle McCord had quite the take on Egbuka and he might be right about his former teammate.
“I think just how unselfish he is is the first thing. At Ohio State, his four years there? Obviously had a great career. He’s a great player. But never really was the star receiver,” McCord said to CBS Sports in an interview at the Shrine Bowl last week. “Obviously, being in the room with Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, Marvin, then just this past year with Jeremiah Smith? I never felt like he got the credit that he deserved but just produced every single year.”
Egbuka recorded his second 1,000-yard season in 2204 when he totaled 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns. Egbuka’s best season came in 2022 when he had 1,151 yards and 10 touchdowns as a secondary option in the Ohio State offense. Egbuka was often the forgotten guy playing with NFL talent like McCord mentioned, but he still got the job done.
“Just having a guy like that who’s super talented in every aspect just being so unselfish to go and do what’s best for the team? I’m excited for his next step.”
Egbuka has dealt with some nagging injuries in his career but has maintained the ability to be on the field. It impacted his play, like in 2023 when he had 515 yards in 10 games.
Ohio State is an NFL wide receiver factor and the expectation is that Egbuka is the next newcomer that will make an impact in the league.
