Every Saturday before the Sunday schedule of games begins around the NFL, the league hands down fines from the games during the previous week.
That means each week, some players are hit with news they didn’t want to hear. NFL fines aren’t cheap either, so each time a player is fined it is costly. That is the case for one former Ohio State Buckeye.
Denver Broncos pass rusher Jonathon Cooper was fined $12,668 for roughing the passer in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Browns in Week 13. It was a game that the Broncos won at home, but also one where Cooper laid a hit in a way shouldn’t have on Browns quarterback Jameis Winston. The NFL labeled the hit as a blow to the head/neck. However, Cooper was not even penalized for the hit during the game.
Cooper is a player who has really come on over the past couple of seasons, and he is actually having his best season as a pro this year. The former Buckeye has eight sacks and will soon pass his season-high number of 8.5 sacks with a few games remaining in the regular season. Cooper was a seventh-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Broncos and has steadily improved into a very good player.
The Broncos’ standout also has 49 tackles and a forced fumble to his credit this season. Cooper’s improvement helped it make sense for the Broncos to let former Buckeye Baron Browning go, who is now with the Arizona Cardinals.
Sometimes, players just end up better pros than college players. That is the case with Cooper, who had 10 sacks over five seasons at Ohio State. As a senior, Cooper recorded his most sacks in a season, which was 3.5.
After the announcement from the NFL that he will be docked over 12 grand, Cooper may watch how he hits the quarterback next time. Still, he is having a really strong year in the NFL and is another Buckeye doing great things.
