The NFL tampering period begins today and that means free agency is here. Expect a number of former Ohio State Buckeyes to be on the move this week.
There have already been multiple big moves around the NFL leading up to the tampering period. One big move was the Pittsburgh Steelers acquiring WR DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks for a second-round pick in 2025.
This came shortly after the Seahawks traded QB Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders and released WR Tyler Lockett. Stock could be up big for a former Buckeye after the latest moves.
Former Ohio State star Jaxon Smith-Njigba could put up even bigger numbers in 2025 with the Seahawks
Smith-Njigba’s stock is up big time following the departures of Lockett and Metcalf. JSN was the team’s leading wideout in 2024 and he is set up to have to produce even more going forward. The Seahawks need to figure out their quarterback situation, which will come in free agency perhaps. But when the QB arrives, they’re going to have a young star talent to throw the ball to.
In 2024, Smith-Njigba caught 100 passes for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns. It was a big jump from the 628 yards and four touchdowns that JSN had in 2023 as a rookie. The Ohio State product entered as a full-time starter in 2024 and looked the part by being named to his first Pro Bowl.
JSN’s targets are about to go up a bunch as the top guy for the offense. Smith-Njigba was targeted 93 times as a rookie, then 137 times in his second season.
Smith-Njigba was a breakout star in 2021 at Ohio State out of nowhere with 1,606 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. That season alone carried his draft stock to becoming a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Injury limited JSN to playing in just three games and had five catches in his final season at Ohio State.
If you are into fantasy football, expect JSN to go really early in drafts for next season. Of course, the Seahawks are going to address wide receiver because they need to. However, the Ohio State product still won’t have as much talent around him anymore and is going to see a big jump in usage.
