The college football landscape has been a wild one so far this season. Ohio State started the season as the No. 2 team in the country, and they defeated the No. 1 team, the Texas Longhorns, in the season opener. Since then, the Longhorns have lost a second game, and they’re now an unranked team. As a result, the best win for the Buckeyes doesn’t look as good as it once did, and it won’t unless the Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian are able to right the ship.
Ohio State is still the No. 1 team and they have a 5-0 record that hasn’t really been tested yet. The Buckeyes went on the road and handled a solid Washington team and came back home to blow out a decent Minnesota squad. The Buckeyes are allowing just five points per game, but one former SEC quarterback believes there is a team ahead of them.
Former Georgia Bulldogs QB Aaron Murray doesn’t have the Buckeyes at the top
Murray’s logic is that the win over Texas isn’t all that great because the Longhorns were just beaten on the road 29-21 by Florida. The former Georgia QB has the Miami Hurricanes at the top, who are undefeated on the season with wins over Notre Dame and Florida State in addition to the Gators. Miami has a better resume to this point and there’s no denying that. The Hurricanes had a tough schedule to start the year and they’ve handled business in an impressive way.
The only problem with this is that football is a matchups game and playing on the road matters. If that game wasn’t in Florida, I’m not sure the Gators beat Texas in Austin. Ohio State is coming off a national championship season and having 14 players drafted back in April. Replacing two coordinators in one season is tough and the Buckeyes did that while not missing a beat so far this season. Julian Sayin also looks like the next quarterback to be developed by Ryan Day and drafted.
Just because the Buckeyes haven’t had the same strength of schedule, what they’ve done to this point has still been impressive and shouldn’t be ignored. Murray’s take that Miami is more talented is a tough sell as well. The Buckeyes have the better skill players, the better defense, the better coaching staff, and the quarterback with a higher ceiling even if he is less experienced. Ohio State should be seen as the best team in the country until they give a reason not to, or another team just looks way ahead. Neither has happened.
