The college football season is longer than ever, and the Ohio State Buckeyes try to counter that with their pace of play on offense. Ohio State feels the fewer snaps it plays, the less wear and tear that its offense takes.

If all goes to plan for the Buckeyes, they’ll play a 16-game season this year. Ohio State needs two wins in the College Football Playoff to advance to a national title game. When it all starts with either Miami or Texas A&M on Dec. 31, the Buckeyes are expected to be without a starter on offense.

Ohio State to be without a starting offensive lineman to start the College Football Playoff

At least to start the CFP, the Buckeyes are expected to be without starting RG Tegra Tshabola, who is dealing with an upper-body injury, according to Lettermen Row.

It’s unclear whether or not the Buckeyes’ starting right guard can return for the semifinal game if the Buckeyes can win in the quarterfinal. Tshabola played just 28 snaps in the first half and one drive of the second half in the Big Ten Championship loss to Indiana before being pulled. Losing Tshabola is losing a player with College Football Playoff experience, even if there had been struggles.

Ohio State has options to replace the injured starter

The trend seemed to be toward Ohio State replacing Tshabola, given his struggles heading into the College Football Playoff. Gabe VanSickle came in and played well for 29 snaps against Indiana after replacing Tshabola.

Josh Padilla is another name that could step in as the right guard. Padilla was splitting reps at times down the stretch of the regular season before an injury set him back. Ohio State’s single biggest question entering the CFP is how the right guard spot will play out.
