Jack Sawyer's moment with Ryan Day
After his game-sealing fumble return for a touchdown, Jack Sawyer shared an awesome moment with his head coach as time dwindled for Texas. The game was in the bag, and the player/coach combo were feeling all of the emotions.
After the victory, Day talked about Sawyer's impact as a Buckeye. He did not hold back, giving the pass rusher tons of credit for everything he's accomplished in his college career.
"He just became a legend at Ohio State." — Ryan Day on Jack Sawyer
There's no doubt that Day and Sawyer shared a special connection. The broadcast during the game shared Sawyer's recruiting story, where he called Ryan Day to tell him he was coming because it's what was in his heart.
Sawyer grew up a Buckeyes fan and made the call to his impending coach while his dad took a nap. It was just the right moment for Sawyer, and now, it has truly come full circle for him and Day.
Even in times when Day caught heat from media and fans alike over the past couple of years, Sawyer has always come to his defense. He's remained steadily confident in the HC and his staff.
“I think coach Day is the only coach I’d want to play for in college football, I’d commit to him a hundred times over if I could…"
"So that’s why, when we talk about coming back, a lot of us have felt like we’re his first real recruiting class. And we kind of all felt like we let him down in a sense of not reaching the goals that we set out to do when we signed our name on the dotted line. Going through the things we’ve gone through the past few years with coach Day definitely feels like we’ve gone through them hand in hand.” — Sawyer at media day over the summer
Now, they're both getting a chance to bring a national title back to Ohio State. We will see if they can finish the job for the Buckeyes.
