The Ohio State Buckeyes walloped the Tennessee Volunteers in the College Football Playoff 42-17 in 2024 en route to Ryan Day's first national championship as a head coach. The performance was embarrassing for the Volunteers, who showed up at the Horseshoe trying to out-North the more Northern program. Instead of being tough guys with no shirts on during pre-game activities, the Buckeyes were more physical and athletic.

Future recruiting battles between the regional rivals will continue to be interesting, and it looks like the fight for 2027 top linebacker Cooper Witten could come down to the Buckeyes and Volunteers. The son of Dallas Cowboys legend and future Hall of Famer Jason Witten, Cooper has already made it known where he wants to visit this fall.

While he's visiting Tennessee first as Georgia comes to Knoxville on Sept. 13, he's eyeing Ohio State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Clemson, and Texas.

“I am going to get to more but haven’t decided what games yet,” Witten said.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder is a five-star prospect and could be moved to safety if his body doesn't take on more bulk. He'd be a terrific fit as Caleb Downs' replacement, for example. He logged five interceptions, eight pass breakups, and seven receiving touchdowns as a sophomore in high school.

It's incredibly early in the 2027 cycle, but Day getting Tennessee back for stealing offensive tackle David Sanders would be a massive win that can torture Volunteer fans.
