The time was always going to come, but it may have arrived a little earlier than the Ohio State Buckeyes expected. Offensive coordinator Brian Hartline is moving on from the program to take his first head-coaching job.

Hartline is set to become the next head coach at USF and will take over for Alex Golesh, who recently accepted the job at Auburn. Hartline is expected to remain with the Buckeyes through the Big Ten Championship and their College Football Playoff run before officially departing.

Jeremiah Smith wasted no time reacting to Hartline’s departure

Wide receiver recruiting in Columbus has been second to none under Hartline since he joined the program as a former player in 2017. First-round picks like Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Marvin Harrison Jr., Emeka Egbuka, and soon-to-be first-rounder Carnell Tate have all come through Columbus and were coached by Hartline. Perhaps the best of them all is Smith, who won’t be draft-eligible until 2027.

Coming into college, Smith was the No. 1 overall recruit and immediately became a star in Columbus as the offense’s top option. Hartline was a major reason Smith chose the Buckeyes, as he wanted to be coached by the best. After posting 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns as a true freshman, Smith has totaled 942 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in five fewer games so far this season.

Hartline’s departure will, unfortunately, affect recruiting. After the season wraps up, all eyes will be on whether any of his wide receivers decide to transfer to South Florida with him.
