Key Ohio State football recruiting target’s latest update sounds promising for the Buckeyes as they battle Michigan for the in-state star
Ohio State is battling Michigan to keep an in-state defender from heading north. His latest comment could be good news for the Buckeyes on where they stand.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are in the midst of spring practice that’ll wrap up on April 18 with the spring game. With it being the spring, it’s also a key recruiting time for the Buckeyes.
A ton of unofficial and official visits are going to take place over the next few months. Ohio State has most of its focus on the class of 2027 where they have nine commitments and the No. 3-ranked class, per 247sports.
Key in state recruiting target gives a strong update after visit to Columbus
2027 Massillon Washington CB Deontay Malone has completed a spring unofficial visit to Columbus before he takes his official visit to Ohio State which is scheduled for May 29. Ohio State is battling the likes of the Michigan Wolverines for Malone with other programs like Pittsburgh and Maryland involved.
“Coach Walton is a great guy,” Malone said following the visit via On3’s Allen Trieu. “I love him. We had a good time and good meetings. I feel like I’d be comfortable around him.”
He’s like my coach but my best friend at the same time. I got to meet head coach Ryan Day at the end of practice. It was good to talk to him. I felt blessed to talk to him.”
Malone is the No. 381 player nationally and No. 23 athlete, according to the 247 Sports Composite Rankings. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound cornerback has already clearly built a strong relationship with Ohio State cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator Tim Walton. Massillon has long been a power in Ohio high school football and the Buckeyes have landed a ton of talent from the Tigers over the years.
Ohio State offered Malone back on Jan. 27, and getting him on campus for his official visit will be the biggest piece to the puzzle. Despite having nine players committed for 2027, the Buckeyes do not have a cornerback committed yet.
Malone would give them a strong prospect in-state at cornerback in a class where Ohio State will need to land multiple of them.
