When Ohio State suits up against Notre Dame in the National Championship tonight, a former Buckeye will be on the call once again.

Kirk Herbstreit has been on the ESPN call for each of the previous three Ohio State College Football Playoff games. Herbstreit, who played at Ohio State from 1989-93, will be joined by Chris Fowler on the broadcast.

Ahead of the game, Herbstreit made an admission about how he feels regarding Ohio State and it should come as no surprise.

“At the end of the day, I am no different than anybody sitting on their couch, I just prepare and talk about it,” Herbstreit said on Saturday during his media availability. “I am an Ohio State junkie. And so when they do well, and I'm able to enjoy it, there's nobody more thrilled than me.”

So yeah, I'll be locked in, and if that scarlet gray confetti comes down, I'm gonna be trying to race to get to the field to hug my son and be a part of that celebration if they're lucky enough to win.”

Herbstreit’s son Zach is a part of the Buckeyes program as a walk-on. Herbstreit has long taken heat for the way he approaches Ohio State as a former player for the Buckeyes. There are fans out there who believe that Herbstreit isn’t too fond of the program. On the other hand, Notre Dame fans may not be too fond of hearing an Ohio State alum on the call for the game.

The former Buckeye turned football analyst admitted that Jack Sawyer’s fumble return against Texas was one that got him excited.

“I try to do a pretty good job [to stay in the middle ground]. I don't go out of my way to like, I just call a game, but I'm a fan, I'm a human,” Herbstreit said.”So when he returned that touchdown, I mean, part of me is kind of like the fan in me comes out. Then they do Carmen Ohio (after the game), that for me is where I can finally let my guard down and be in the moment.”

Wins over Tennessee, Oregon, and Texas have been impressive for Ohio State. Still, the Buckeyes need to finish the job and that means taking down Notre Adams.

Two of the biggest brands in the sport are going to battle it out tonight on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. and in the end, we are going to have a first-time National Championship-winning head coach
