It’s been a couple of weeks since the Ohio State Buckeyes were last on the field in their Big Ten Championship loss to the Indiana Hoosiers. Since then, the majority of the focus has been on College Football Playoff preparation.

The Buckeyes still have to deal with the transfer portal nearing, coaching searches to add to the staff, and recruiting while preparing for either Texas A&M or Miami. Ohio State is ending the week with a big recruiting win ahead of the College Football Playoff prep beginning.

2027 LB Quinton Cypher commits to Ohio State over Alabama and Georgia

It has been trending this way, and it’s now official. Ohio State and linebackers coach James Laurinaitis have their first 2027 linebacker with Millbrook (NC) four-star LB Quinton Cypher announcing his commitment. Cypher chose the Buckeyes over Alabama, Georgia, and Miami.

Cypher just posted a monster junior season with 181 tackles, according to 247 Sports. The newest Buckeye commit is ranked as the No. 11 linebacker and No. 194 player nationally in the class of 2027, per 247 Sports Composite. Cypher marks the Buckeyes’ eighth commitment for the class and they hold the No. 4-ranked class nationally.

With Cypher being the first linebacker commit, the Buckeyes now have three commitments on the defensive side of the ball with four-star S Eli Johnson and three-star S Angelo Smith. Winning Cypher’s commitment over two major SEC programs, with his location being North Carolina, is a big win for Laurinaitis and the Buckeyes.

Ohio State will learn who they play in the CFP tomorrow when Miami and Texas A&M square off. Landing a big-time commitment in the class of 2027 ahead of it is a nice way to end the week.
