Ohio State and Notre Dame are the two teams remaining in the gauntlet that is the first time expanded College Football Playoff format.
The Buckeyes have taken the road of defeating Tennessee, Oregon, and Texas to come within a win of their first National Championship in a decade. Former Buckeye and current Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman has led Notre Dame to wins over Indiana, Georgia, and Penn State.
Ahead of the National Championship game, Freeman shared his thoughts on the Buckeye program and gave them a bit of respect.
"I know Coach Day and a lot of coaches on their staff that do things the right way,” Freeman said on Sunday. “You can aspire to win national championships but you also want to develop the young men that come through your program and I think both of our programs do a great job of that."
Freeman has been the head coach at Notre Dame since 2021 and is just 39 years old. The former Buckeye standout is one of the most impressive young head coaches in the sport, which is why the NFL is very interested in him. Notre Dame is a well-coached team that does all of the little things right, which makes up for not being a team that recruits in the top five typically.
A win for Day and the Buckeyes would move him to 70-10 as the head coach in Columbus. It has been a remarkable stretch to start his tenure as a head coach. A National Championship would be Day proving that he has what it takes to get over the hump. The Buckeyes consistently recruit in the top five of the sport and have been as aggressive as any in the NIL game.
Tonight is going to be a battle and as it currently stands, the Buckeyes are a -8.5 favorite according to most sports books.
