Expect there to be plenty of talk between Miami and Ohio State ahead of the College Football Playoff game.

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Miami Hurricanes have a history that includes one of the best national championship games ever in college football, back in 2003.

Ohio State won that game when no one really gave them a chance at all — and the Hurricanes haven’t been the same since. Miami is in the College Football Playoff this season, chasing success that it hasn’t had since 2002. That loss still sticks around for Hurricanes fans, and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith poked at that on Monday ahead of the two teams playing in just over a week.

“You see it all over the internet, all over Twitter. They’re still talking about that 20 years later, they’re still worried about it,” Smith said of the matchup back in Jan. 2003. “We got something coming for them New Year’s Eve.”

Smith got this week started with a bit of warning for the Canes, saying that the Buckeyes have something coming for them in just over a week. There’s no doubt that the Buckeyes are looking forward to this one after being off since their early December loss to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten Championship.

“I have too much respect for the game of football, having played it, to just openly just come out and speak about other teams,” Cristobal said on Monday. “To each its own, I don’t judge. I don’t. Different programs have different ways of doing things. It’s not part of our culture. Always respect your opponent, always prepare to the highest standard humanly possible.”

There will be trash talk coming from the Miami side at some point, if there isn’t already. That’s just how big-time games go in the year 2025, and it isn’t going away. Miami recruited Smith hard as a recruit in their own backyard when he was the No. 1 overall player in the class of 2024. It was the Buckeyes that ended up getting the signature and won a title with Smith as a rookie.

The star Ohio State wideout has 1,086 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in 12 games so far this season. As a true freshman last year, Smith went for 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 16 games. Ohio State’s star wideout now has to go out and back up his talk against Miami on New Year’s Eve.
