National insider drops bucket of cold water on Ohio State football’s chances of landing the five-star player they badly want
Ohio State is chasing another five-star tight end this year but it’s not looking good for the Buckeyes.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are off to a strong start in the class of 2027 after bringing in 28 players for 2026. With the up-ramp in transfer portal activity, the Buckeyes are expected to bring in a slightly smaller class in 2027.
Ohio State has nine commitments so far and the No. 3-ranked class overall, per 247sports. The Buckeyes are ramping up recruiting efforts as we get closer to the spring, but things don’t look great for one of their top targets closing Columbus.
Ohio State is tracking toward missing on a top offensive target
Libertyville (IL) 2027 TE Brock Williams has been a major target for the Buckeyes and tight ends coach Keenan Bailey. Ohio State has major contention for the nation’s No. 2 tight end, and it looks like he’s trending away from the Buckeyes.
Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong has dropped a bucket of cold water on Ohio State’s chances.
“I don’t love my Ohio State prediction regarding the No. 2 tight end Brock Williams,” Wiltfong wrote. “I feel like the Buckeyes are going to start ramping it up with others and the first two that come to mind are Seneca Driver and Jaxon Dollar.”
Williams is the No. 2 tight end and No. 52 overall player in the class, per 247sports Composite. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound tight end has been a longtime target for the Buckeyes since they offered him in January of last year.
Georgia appears to be the team to beat, and that’s no surprise with their tight end development. It’s hard to pass over a school that developed Brock Bowers recently. Texas is the other school in the mix for Bowers, and it’s known they’ll be willing to offer a big payday.
Make no mistake about it, Williams is one of the top playmakers in the class regardless of position. The length is there and Williams is a natural pass catcher. If the talented tight end fills out his frame in Year 1 of college, he’s going to have a chance to be great.
Williams will be committing in late February or early March. The top tight end visited Georgia and Texas recently but the Buckeyes were not given a visit. Do with that what you will.
Landing an elite tight end has been a goal of the Buckeyes this cycle, but it looks like they could be trending toward having to turn their attention elsewhere.
