National recruiting insider reveals Ryan Day is making another move to try to keep Chris Henry Jr. from flipping to Oregon
It’s been a wild couple days for the Buckeyes and they’re now trying to keep their top commitment.
The Ohio State Buckeyes will take on the Indiana Hoosiers tomorrow in the Big Ten Championship, but there’s been plenty to talk about in Columbus this week outside of the game.
Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline signed on to become the head coach at USF on Wednesday, and the Buckeyes have experienced a bit of recruiting fallout since then. Four-star WR Kayden Dixon-Wyatt flipped to the USC Trojans, and now the Buckeyes are trying to hang on to his five-star Mater Dei teammate, Chris Henry Jr.

Ohio State’s head coach made a call to Henry Jr. after Hartline’s decision to let him know that the Buckeyes’ success with wide receivers goes beyond Hartline’s tenure, and that Oregon has never produced a first-round wideout. Now, it appears Day made a second call to Henry on Thursday night in an effort to keep him committed.
“Ohio State is not giving up on holding onto Henry,” Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong wrote on Thursday. “Lott’s official signing with the Ducks has increased optimism in Columbus about keeping Henry in the fold. Ryan Day is planning on reaching out to Henry’s camp following the Buckeyes’ practice this evening.”
Five-star Oregon commit WR Jalen Lott didn’t sign with the Ducks on Wednesday, which raised some eyebrows. Lott is officially in Oregon’s recruiting class now, and the Ducks will have to commit the necessary funds to keep him there. That development may give Ohio State confidence that its NIL offer will be competitive with what Oregon is putting on the table.
Ohio State will have Carnell Tate off to the NFL after this season, and there will be playing time available. Brandon Inniss is likely to return for his senior season, but the Buckeyes don’t have a sure-fire star on the outside opposite Jeremiah Smith. Quincy Porter may be the current leader to take on that role, but it’s possible Henry Jr. could arrive and earn it quickly.
If the Buckeyes can’t keep Henry Jr. committed, they could allocate those NIL funds toward adding a wide receiver from the transfer portal. Michigan State’s Nick Marsh is already a big name in the portal at the position, and more options will become available once the portal officially opens in January.
