Back on Nov. 26, 2022, the Ohio State Buckeyes lost to the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 45-23. On that day, Michigan received a key commitment from a player inside Ohio Stadium.

Flash forward three years, and that player is now set to play for the Buckeyes. Ohio State has been busy with the transfer portal, and now it has made a key defensive addition.

Ohio State adds key CB depth with former Michigan and Alabama player Cam Calhoun

Ohio State has added former Alabama, Utah, and Michigan CB Cam Calhoun from the transfer portal on Thursday. Calhoun is a Winton Woods (OH) product who played high school football with Ohio State CB Jermaine Mathews Jr. Calhoun was a four-star recruit in the class of 2023 and spent one season at Michigan.

After redshirting at Michigan, Calhoun became a key piece of Utah’s defense in 2024 with a team-high nine pass breakups, one interception, and 21 tackles. The 2024 season with the Utes landed Calhoun a shot to play in the SEC with Alabama. Calhoun was mainly a depth and special teams player for Bama with seven tackles and one pass breakup in 14 games.

Ohio State lost Bryce West and Aaron Scott Jr. to the transfer portal and needed to add depth. Devin Sanchez is penciled in as Ohio State’s two outside cornerbacks, with Florida State transfer Earl Little Jr. filling in at the nickel. Calhoun will give the Buckeyes depth in the place of West and Scott’s departures.

Alabama perspective on Ohio State’s new addition

Calhoun struggled to find a home in Tuscaloosa, and that ultimately led to his decision to hit the portal, but that’s nothing new from him. The former Wolverine did his best work in Utah, but it never translated to playing time in the SEC. By the end of the season, despite poor play from some other veterans in the lineup, Alabama turned to true freshman Dijon Lee at the cornerback position instead.

That doesn’t mean Calhoun is a bad player. He has everything you desire in a boundary corner. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Ohio State coaching staff found a way to hone his traits into steady play. OSU has taken a few Alabama players in the past and made them work, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this addition is any different.
