Ohio State Buckeyes expected to lose OC Brian Hartline to an unexpected school thanks to wild college football hiring cycle
Not good news for the Buckeyes ahead of the Big Ten Championship.
The Ohio State Buckeyes may be preparing for the Indiana Hoosiers and the Big Ten Championship, but they just received some unfortunate off-field news that will force Ryan Day to make a new hire.
Brian Hartline set to take his first head-coaching job after one year calling plays in Columbus
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Hartline is expected to become the next head coach at South Florida. He will take over for Alex Golesh, who just left USF to take the job at Auburn. Hartline’s move comes shortly after he was considered a candidate for the Kentucky Wildcats’ head-coaching vacancy before they hired Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein.
Losing Hartline, 39, is tough for the Buckeyes, as he has been exceptional in developing wide receivers during his time in Columbus. This is his first year as the primary play-caller after spending the previous two seasons as co-offensive coordinator. The former Buckeye standout has the Julian Sayin-led offense humming and has impressed in his first season in the role.
Replacing coordinators is nothing new for head coach Ryan Day, and he’ll have to do it again heading into 2026. Hartline took over for Chip Kelly, and now Ohio State will once again be searching for a new offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. Hartline had been with the Buckeyes since 2017 and has made a great climb with the program since then. He is expected to remain with the Buckeyes through their College Football Playoff run before departing for USF.
