The Ohio State Buckeyes and Brian Hartline (especially him) have been on fire when it comes to recruiting the wide receiver position for several years now. And not just recruiting receivers, but also developing them into first round draft picks.
Thanks to Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Garrett Wilson, and Chris Olave the Ohio State Buckeyes have logged four straight NFL Drafts in a row with a first round wide receiver selection.
That is of course an NFL record–and an absolutely wild one at that–but now Ohio State is set to possibly break recruiting class records as well given their latest commitment on Friday.
Jerquaden Guilford, 4 star WR chooses Ohio State over Ole Miss
The Ohio State Buckeyes already had five star wide receiver Chris Henry Jr., four stars Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, Jaeden Ricketts, and Brock Boyd all committed for their 2026 recruiting class prior to this week.
All four blue chip talents. Already on par with some of the best wide receiver classes in college football recruiting history.
However, that apparently wasn't good enough for Ryan Day and his ridiculously impressive recruiting apparatus. On Friday, four star Jerquaden Guilford (from Fort Wayne, IN) became the fifth blue chip wide receiver to commit to Brian Hartline and the Buckeyes for 2026 alone.
Guilford had originally gotten his finalists down to Michigan, Indiana, Ole Miss, and Ohio State back in June following his official visits. He was set to commit at the end of June, but then changed his mind as he wanted to reconsider all of his best options.
When commitment day finally arrived Guilford had narrowed his search down to a battle between Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss Rebels and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ultimately, Guilford chose the Buckeyes saying, "the stats don't lie", when it comes to Ohio State's success in developing the wide receiver position. That might be the understatement of the century.
If Ohio State does end up keeping all five wide receiver commits, and they retain their blue chip status, the 2026 Buckeyes will break their program's recruiting class record with five blue chip wide receivers in the same year. That would–at least according to recruiting pedigree–go down as perhaps the deepest wide receiver class in modern recruiting history.
Jerquaden Guilford's fit with Ohio State offense
It's one thing for Guilford to commit to Ohio State, but it's another feat entirely to actually end up seeing the field when he's playing amid the most competitive wide receiver room in the nation. So, if Guilford does somehow beat out some of his own recruiting classmates and climb the depth chart for the Buckeyes, where would he fit?
Guilford is a tall, lanky, wide receiver with phenomenal acceleration and speed to win from any pre-snap position, but he certainly could fill a specific role better than most. His best fit for Ohio State would likely be as a perimeter field stretching weapon that could also bring some immense value in the red zone–once he fills out his frame just a bit.
He could shift inside some, at least in bunch formations, but Guilford should offer an edge over many in the 2026 class as an intermediate-deep-route specialist that can win against tough outside cornerback matchups thanks to his already impressive release at the line.
The competition looks fierce at the true X position for the next few years with Jeremiah Smith, Quincy Porter, and perhaps talents like Mylan Graham all slated to hog snaps on the perimeter for the next two seasons beyond 2025 (Carnell Tate likely gone, possibly Brandon Inniss too). However, Guilford should likely be able to work his way into some outside wide receiver action by 2027.
