Ryan Day and his Ohio State Buckeyes staff just keep winning both on and off the field. They're fresh off winning a national championship. They brought in yet another top five college football recruiting class this offseason. Now they're at it again, but this time looking far ahead as Ohio State is set to host a potential quarterback of the future early next week.
Who is this young possible QB of the future for the Buckeyes, and can they actually land him? Let's dive in.
Champ Monds, Elite QB Recruit
First off, Champ Monds is an elite quarterback name. His full given name is Wonderful Monds IV, but he's beginning to just simply go by "Champ" amid his early recruiting process.
Monds is still just a freshman in high school, so he might not be playing college football until 2028, but he's already considered by many to be on the fast track for five star status given his impressive physical traits and wild production last fall.
The high profile blue blood program offers have been coming in fast following Monds' absurdly efficient freshman season where he completed nearly 70% of his passes, tossed 23 passing touchdowns, then ran the ball for over 500 yards and nine scores on the ground.
The Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, and Tennessee Vols have all been gaining some early momentum in his recruitment with recent visits, but now it's Ohio State's turn. The Buckeyes will host Champ Monds on Monday, April 7th according to multiple sources which should help the Buckeyes gain some ground in the early recruiting race for this elite talent.
Yes, the Buckeyes look like they're stacked at quarterback for now with two young five stars in Julian Sayin and Tavien St. Clair already on the team, but they'll need their quarterback of the future by the time Monds heads off to college.
Monds is already 6'3", 200+ pounds as a freshman in high school, completes passes (in live game action) with 60 air yards underneath them, and is already garnering comparisons to five star recruits like DJ Lagway (Florida Gators). If Monds continues filling out his already "built" frame and becomes even more athletic as he develops physically there's no reason why he couldn't be the consensus number one quarterback recruit in the nation here soon.
Monds pulled in offers from the Buckeyes, Ole Miss, Auburn, West Virginia, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Tennessee, and USF all in January alone. The hype is really starting to build with Champ Monds and it certainly doesn't look like that's going to slow down at all any time soon.
The quarterback situation should be alright for 2025, 2026, and perhaps even 2027 if Tavien St. Clair sticks around that long. Brady Edmunds (consensus five star) is already committed for 2027. Regardless of that, Ryan Day and his staff always try to bring in the best talent at the quarterback position, no matter how stacked their room might already be in any given season.
Monds already looks like one of the safest bets to succeed in the 2028 recruiting class, and if his arm talent improves he may end up being the key to winning future national championships for the Buckeyes. Let's hope Day and his crew make a good first impression with Monds as he visits next week.
