The 2025 Ohio State Buckeyes are seeing some early challenges replenishing their most talented positions from their National Championship roster, but the early news out of spring practices isn't all bad. This young roster is giving new opportunities to the stars of tomorrow.

There are recognizable names that fans know to be excited about. The development of linebackers Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese will be a key part of the defense's success. We're also expecting Caleb Downs and Eddrick Houston to be foundational presences.

Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has his eyes set on another prospect who has stepped up that might make everything easier.

Sophomore linebacker Payton Pierce has the pedigree to be a star as a former four-star recruit. Here's what Patricia said about Pierce thus far.

"Everyone is gonna feel Payton Pierce right away," he said. "He comes downhill with a physicality that is phenomenal. He is a physical, physical player."

The key is that Pierce's on-field communication has also seen a big boost.

He was a bit delayed last year because he came to campus after getting surgery for a pre-existing injury. Linebackers coach James Laurinaitis already praised Payton as well.

“Payton's awesome. Tough,” Laurinaitis said. “Just like an absolute natural. Absolute natural middle linebacker. His feel in the box and his ability to maneuver and feel blocking schemes. He's got that wrestling background, so his striking ability and the way he snags and then runs his feet on contact, like, it's just a throwback, man. I love Payton. I expect Payton to have a lot of playing time.”
