Ohio State backup quarterback Devin Brown announced he's entering the transfer portal. We originally reported three weeks ago that Brown was likely to depart the Buckeyes, and now it's official. Brown will stay with the Buckeyes through the College Football Playoff before heading to his new team.

After spending three years with Ohio State as the backup, completing 26-of-46 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

“After many long conversations with my family and careful consideration of my future, I have decided to enter the transfer portal following this season,” Brown wrote in his portal announcement. “I am beyond grateful for my time at Ohio State. It has truly been an honor to wear the Scarlet and Gray. The memories and lifelong relationships I have formed here will always be cherished. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Coach Day and all the coaches who have supported me during my time in Columbus.

I entered this season with the intent of doing everything I could to win a National Championship with my brothers, and that goal is still very much alive. I will remain with the team and honor my commitment for the remainder of the season as we pursue our goal of winning it all."

Facing the likelihood of being the backup once again next year, especially with current freshman Julian Sayin seen as the frontrunner to start for Ohio State in 2025, Brown has determined that it's time to transfer to a different school where he will have a better opportunity to earn the starting position next season.

Brown's only start as a Buckeye occurred in the 2023 Cotton Bowl against Missouri. Unfortunately, his appearance in the New Year’s Six Bowl was cut short after just four drives, as the 6-foot-3, 214-pound quarterback sustained an ankle sprain while sacked in the game's first quarter.

Now, the thought within insider circles is that Brown will return to Utah in the aftermath of Isaac Wilson's transfer. He could then compete with Cameron Rising in 2025 if Rising is granted a medical hardship for his eighth year in college.

Now, the Buckeyes can fully move on to Sayin and Tavien St. Clair as the future of the program. Sayin has played sparingly despite us begging Ryan Day to get the freshman on the field more than Brown. While Brown's experience is valuable, Sayin has clearly been the team's plan for 2025 since hitting campus and almost winning the backup job.

St. Clair might also have the chance to compete to win. The in-state 5-star prospect is bigger and more physically gifted than Sayin but hasn't been in the program for a full year.

The Buckeyes are in great hands moving forward, and Brown has made a good decision to look elsewhere. While it's a bummer Brown was unable to establish his roots in Columbus for his entire career, only one quarterback can play at a time.

Now, Brown has the chance to carve out his legacy elsewhere, and Sayin looks like the logical replacement for Howard.
