Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith starts the week out with a warning for Miami ahead of the College Football Playoff
Ohio State’s star wideout from Florida isn’t shying away from this big game.
The Ohio State Buckeyes matching up with the Miami Hurricanes in the College Football Playoff brings up the national championship game from back in 2003. Miami hasn’t been able to get back into major contention since the Buckeyes defeated them that year in the biggest game.
Flash forward over 20 years, Miami is back in contention and a 10-3 win over Texas A&M in the first round of the College Football Playoff earned them a shot against Ohio State. The winner of this game on Dec. 31 will take on the winner of Ole Miss and Georgia in the semifinal round.
Jeremiah Smith has a simple message for Miami ahead of their matchup
“You see it all over the internet, all over Twitter. They’re still talking about that 20 years later, they’re still worried about it,” Smith said of the matchup back in Jan. 2003. “We got something coming for them New Year’s Eve.”
There’s a bit of trash talk coming from the confident Smith toward his hometown team. Ohio State recruited Smith out of South Florida as the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2024. Ohio State had to hold off Miami to land Smith, and it’s worked out just as the Buckeyes could have hoped for. Smith has posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and the Buckeyes don’t win it all last year without him being the focal point of the offense. Getting a win against Miami is the top focus for everyone with the Buckeyes, but Smith may have a little extra motivation.
Ohio State’s last game out was a 13-10 loss to Indiana and they simply don’t want to go out of this season with back-to-back losses. Miami presents some of the same problems that Indiana does, including a very strong defensive line that can cause issues. Ohio State has to come out strong on offense in this game, and connecting with Smith early will be key.
Miami players will get a hold of Smith’s comment and they’re not going to take kindly to it. That’s part of the game though and trash talk happens. Ohio State and the Hurricanes will battle it out on New Year’s Eve to see who gets the last word.
