The Ohio State Buckeyes fulfilled the biggest question mark this offseason with their offensive coordinator hire over the weekend.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers OC Arthur Smith is the latest NFL coach to come to the college ranks to coach under Ryan Day.

Ohio State is looking to keep the rest of its staff intact after losing Brian Hartline to South Florida, and they’re even working on another significant hire for the program.

The Buckeyes top target on the board to add to the current staff is Notre Dame’s Marty Biagi, who the Buckeyes are looking to make the special teams coordinator, according to Lettermen Row

Ohio State is putting significant resources into its staff this offseason, with Smith coming in as an extra coach beyond the 10 who can go on the road to recruit. The Buckeyes brought in LSU’s Cortez Hankton to coach wideouts and are expected to return the rest of the current coaching staff. Smith is viewed as the sixth assistant on the offensive side.

Biagi would be an additional assistant and not one of the allotted 10 either.

Marty Biagi could help with the kicking problems Ohio State has

Biagi has been the special teams coordinator for the Fighting Irish since 2023 and held the same position at Ole Miss for a season before that. The Kentucky native got his coaching start as a special teams assistant in 2016, a role that landed him as the special teams coordinator at North Texas for the next three seasons.

Additionally, Biagi has Big Ten experience as Purdue’s special teams coordinator from 2020 through 2021.

Ohio State added Connor Hawkins from Baylor in the transfer portal to be the next placekicker for the foreseeable future. Hawkins has three years of eligibility after a standout redshirt freshman season with the Bears.

Having as many assistants as you can who can coach that aspect of the game is key. Day is in a CEO role more than ever, with input on offense. With Patricia and Smith in place, adding Biagi would be another layer to the method.
