Ohio State football has already filled a key need in the transfer portal that couldn’t be swept under the rug
The first transfer portal commitment for the Buckeyes is on the board.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are busy with the transfer portal that opened on Friday. Ohio State has had north of a dozen players make their way to the portal, and more could be on the way.
In this current state of college football, the transfer portal is a huge part of roster construction. Ohio State is bringing in its biggest freshman class ever, with 28 players signed. However, the Buckeyes are still going to have to hit the portal heavily.
Ohio State lands first commitment from the transfer portal
The Buckeyes are on the board with their first transfer portal addition, and they’re bringing in a former Ohio Bobcats tight end. With Will Kacmarek out of eligibility, the Buckeyes need depth at tight end, specifically as a blocker. Adding former Ohio TE Mason Williams gives the Buckeyes depth.
The coincidental thing is that Williams is coming from Ohio, the same school that Kacmarek came from. Williams just wrapped up his redshirt sophomore season and will have two years of eligibility. The 6-foot-5, 257-pound tight end had 276 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 23 games in 2025. In 2024, Williams had 211 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns in 14 games.
In addition to Kacmarek graduating, Ohio State lost TE Jelani Thurman to the transfer portal. Ohio State doesn’t yet have word whether or not TE Max Klare will declare for the NFL draft. Even if Klare comes back, the Buckeyes still need another inline blocker.
The Buckeyes’ tight end room right now has Williams joining Bennett Christian, Max LeBlanc, Nate Roberts, Brody Lennon, and incoming freshman Nick Lautar. If Klare doesn’t return, the Buckeyes are likely to add another tight end.
