The Ohio State Buckeyes were back on the practice field Thursday as fall camp kicked off and preparations began for their Week 1 showdown against the Texas Longhorns.

As camp gets underway, several starting spots are up for grabs following the departure of 14 players in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately, the Buckeyes have already suffered their first potential setback of fall camp with a player who is likely a starter in 2025.

Former Five-Star recruit Eddrick Houston injured during first fall practice for Ohio State

During 11-on-11 drills, freshman defensive tackle Eddrick Houston went down with what appeared to be a right leg injury, according to multiple reports. Trainers evaluated him on the field, and he was forced to exit practice.

“I haven’t talked to the trainers yet,” head coach Ryan Day stated after practice. “We’ll go from there once we talk to them.”

Houston and Kayden McDonald are expected to step into starting roles on the interior of Ohio State’s defensive line following the departures of Tyliek Williams and Ty Hamilton. While other players like Will Smith Jr. are also expected to contribute, Houston arguably has the highest ceiling of the group.

Originally recruited as an edge rusher, Houston transitioned to the interior defensive line under Larry Johnson. He was ranked the No. 29 overall player in the class of 2024 and the No. 5 player in Georgia, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Ohio State explored adding a defensive tackle in the spring transfer portal but was unable to land a player they believed could make an immediate impact. The post-championship transfer of Hero Kanu to Texas remains a puzzling loss for the Buckeyes.

“It got to the point where, for us, there were certain people in the portal, and the question was, ‘Are they better than what we have?’ And the decision that was made was no,” Day explained last week at Big Ten Football Media Days.

The hope in Columbus has to be that Houston’s injury isn’t serious and that he won’t be sidelined for long. However, anytime a leg injury occurs to a player in the trenches, there’s reason for concern.
