No one can say Ryan Day is afraid of a heat check. With the Ohio State Buckeyes boasting an elite tight end room right now and their chase for five-star 2027 tight end Brock Williams still in the mix, the program is still trying to add more talent. With how the transfer portal spreads talent thin, it makes sense.

And now, Day wants to poach a four-star Alabama commit from Kalen DeBoer’s hands. The top prospect in Illinois committed back in June, but the Buckeyes haven’t given up on the 6-foot-6, 225-pounder. Experts say this is trending one way.

Here’s the latest on Sutter’s recruitment and where the Buckeyes stand.

Ohio State chasing Alabama commit Mark Sutter as top flip candidate

Sutter’s recruitment is a unique one. Ohio State badly wanted Sutter, and his dad played linebacker for Northwestern before landing in the NFL for six years. One of his other siblings is also a Cleveland Browns employee, so the Midwest is familiar to his family.

But Rivals doesn’t think he’ll stick around the area.

“Alabama four-star tight end commit Mack Sutter continues to be a popular recruit. There is good reason for that since he’s one of the best players in his class regardless of position. The Illinois native has still been hearing from the Ohio State coaching staff quite a bit this fall. Tight ends coach Keenan Bailey was at Sutter’s school a couple weeks ago and the pair have a great relationship.

There is talk that some around Sutter that prefer Ohio State to Alabama, my prediction is the standout tight end will stick with the Tide. Coach Kalen DeBoer seems to have steadied the ship in Tuscaloosa and could have the program trending back up.

Look for Sutter to return to Alabama Oct. 18 for the matchup with Tennessee.”

We’ll see if they’re right, or the Buckeyes can scoop in for a late, major win. Recruiting battles aren’t over until National Signing Day, and even then, we’ve seen teams lose out initially but end up circling back via the portal years later as things shake out.
