Ohio State has multiple coaching vacancies to fill on Ryan Day’s staff after some departures took place after the National Championship win over Notre Dame.

A lot of the talk has been about coordinators Chip Kelly and Jim Knowles leaving Columbus. Another big impact departure is Justin Frye, who coached the offensive line the last few years, and is now the offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals

Day and the Buckeyes have acted quickly to hire Frye’s replacement and it appears they’ve gotten a good one.

First reported by FootballScoop, Ohio State is hiring Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen to be the next offensive line coach in Columbus. Bowen had been the OC for the last three seasons at Virginia Tech.

The interesting thing here is that the Buckeyes got Bowen to leave a coordinator job in the ACC to be a position coach. Granted, it is Ohio State compared to Virginia Tech, but you don’t see that too often. Before being with the Hokies, Bowen was the tight ends coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021.

Bowen was with Penn State from 2018 until 2020 and roles of co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach with the Nittany Lions. Bowen was the primary recruited for OT Olu Fashanu and TE Tyler Warren while with Penn State. Bowen, 35, comes from Georgia and attended college at Maryland.

Other coaching stops for Ohio State’s new offensive line coach include Maryland, Towson, and Fordham. Ohio State will have to replace Seth McLaughlin, Donovan Jackson, Josh Simmons, and Josh Fryar from 2024’s initial starting offensive line.

The Buckeyes have not recruited as well as you would think with the offensive line, so that should be a point of emphasis with Bowen. Expect Ohio State to have other hires made in the near future.
