The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team fell to 15-8 on the season after an 82-61 loss to the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday.

Ohio State had a great chance at picking up a stellar win for its tournament resume against No. 2 Michigan and fell straight on its face. The Buckeyes have eight games left, which could be make-or-break for the future of head coach Jake Diebler.

Ohio State HC Jake Diebler is on the hot seat

A day after the loss to Michigan, On3’s Pete Nakos has labeled Diebler as a coach on the hot seat to watch. Ohio State has missed the NCAA Tournament for two straight seasons and making it three could call for a quick exit for Diebler.

Ohio State missed the postseason last year in what was Diebler’s first full season in charge with a 17-15 record. Ohio State looks improved this season, but the last eight games will be telling. The Buckeyes have games left with USC, Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue, Penn State, and Indiana.

Diebler is 40-26 so far through his first 66 games as a head coach as Chris Holtmann’s replacement. If the Buckeyes were to fire Diebler after the season, it would cost them less than $5 million to do so.

One big point to watch here is that the Buckeyes have a McDonald’s All-American signed for the class of 2026 with five-star F Anthony Thompson. Ohio State’s decision after the season with Diebler could impact what Thompson decides to do as well.

All eyes will be on how these last eight regular-season games go for the Buckeyes. Diebler is undoubtedly on a warm seat and the pressure is on the Buckeyes to be playing meaningful basketball in March.
