Ohio State QB Julian Sayin’s finish in the Heisman race could be good news for the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff
Julian Sayin has earned his spot in the Heisman Trophy race for the 2025 season.
Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes once again sent a quarterback to New York this season as a Heisman finalist.
Julian Sayin has had an impressive season for the Buckeyes, and he’s been everything they could have hoped for a year after Will Howard led them to a national championship.
Julian Sayin doesn’t win the Heisman, and that could be good for what’s ahead
Not that Sayin needs any extra motivation. Each game he plays in the College Football Playoff will be the biggest game of his life as far as they can advance. Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza has won the Heisman, as expected, on Saturday night. Sayin finished fourth in voting behind Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia and Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love.
Ohio State recruited Sayin hard before he committed to Alabama out of high school in 2024. Once Nick Saban retired, Sayin knew he wanted to be a Buckeye, and Ohio State wanted him to. In his first season as a starter, Sayin has led the Buckeyes to a 12-1 record, with the only loss coming last time out against Indiana in the Big Ten Championship. A 13-10 loss to Indiana undoubtedly had a big impact on the Heisman candidacy and how things played out.
Sayin is a laid-back player for the most part, who lets his game speak for itself. The Ohio State starter has shown unreal accuracy this season, completing 78.4 percent of his passes for 3,323 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. In comparison, Mendoza completed 71.5 percent of his passes for 2,980 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.
The big goal is still ahead for Ohio State
While Sayin isn’t bringing home the biggest personal accolades in college football, Ohio State’s big goal of repeating remains in front of them. After coming up short in the Heisman race, Sayin can go out and prove himself on the big stage in the College Football Playoff. That’s the best-case scenario for the Buckeyes, who will play on Dec. 31 against the winner of Miami and Texas A&M.
