Ohio State quarterback battle update comes with one player starting to look the part of a starter for the Buckeyes
Ohio State will have a quarterback decision before long with Texas right around the corner.
Quarterback battles and Ohio State have gone together like peanut butter and jelly ever since Ryan Day became head coach of the Buckeyes.
This fall camp is no different, with sophomore Julian Sayin and junior Lincoln Kienholz vying for the starting job. Sayin— a former five-star recruit and Elite 11 winner—enters as the favorite, and he may have taken a step toward being named the starter this past weekend.
Ohio State quarterback update coming out of fall scrimmage
The Buckeyes held a closed scrimmage on Saturday, and the media won’t see them again until they take the field against the Texas Longhorns on Aug. 30. Coming out of the scrimmage, Sayin appears to be gaining ground in the competition.
“Source tells On3 that Julian Sayin’s arm continues to flash, including a good scrimmage performance. The source also said Sayin is starting to look the part of a starter,” Pete Nakos of On3 reported.
Kienholz brings the bigger physical frame and can beat defenses with both his legs and his arm. Sayin, however, has an impressively quick release and arm talent that Kienholz simply doesn’t match. The former Alabama commit wouldn’t even be in Columbus if not for Nick Saban’s retirement—a turn of events that may have been a blessing in disguise for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State is just weeks away from naming a new starting quarterback to replace Will Howard, whose lone season in Columbus ended with a National Championship. The Buckeyes will once again be expected to compete for the title this year—even with a fresh face under center.
