The NFL offseason is about to fire up with the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this week. Then, in a couple of weeks, free agency will take place.
As always, we will see teams hand out big contracts to players. Sometimes, these contracts turn out to be a good decision, and other times, teams have regrets rather quickly.
One former Ohio State Buckeye is poised to make a team happy in free agency because he is one of the best values.
Former Ohio State RB J.K. Dobbins is one of the best values in free agency
Recently here at A to Z Sports, Evan Winter and Wendell Ferreira put together a list of best values at each position in free agency. After a standout season with the Los Angeles Chargers bouncing back from some tough injuries, Dobbins is that guy at the running back position.
“There is an argument for Aaron Jones to be the best running back of this free agency class, and that's totally fair based on their track records in the NFL. But Jones is 30, and Dobbins is only 26. Both have long injury histories, so the age difference is particularly relevant.
Also, the market valuation makes Dobbins an even more appealing option. According to Spotrac, Aaron Jones is expected to get a one-year, $5.6 million deal. Dobbins' market projection comes at $4.1 million per season, with a two-year, $8.1 million contract.” — Wendell Ferreira, A to Z Sports
After a standout career at Ohio State, Dobbins was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Dobbins ran for 805 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games. The next two years were unfortunate for Dobbins with season-ending injuries. Between 2021 and 2023, Dobbins only played in nine games with the Ravens. He missed all of the 2021 season and played in just one game in 2023.
Going to play for Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers was a good decision for Dobbins, as he was able to build his stock back up and play in 13 games. The ex-Ohio State star had 905 yards and nine touchdowns in 2024.
It is unclear where Dobbins is going to land in free agency, but expect the Buckeye to be one of the more sought-after teams.
