Tuesday was a special spring practice for the Ohio State Buckeyes because players received their gold pants from the 2025 win over the Michigan Wolverines. Ohio State ended the four-game skid against Michigan with a 27-9 road win.

It was the first win over Michigan for any player on the roster, so these gold pants meant a bit more. The gold pants being handed out on Tuesday led to one Ohio State player talking about the Wolverines’ football program a bit.

Luke Montgomery comments on the decision to go to Ohio State over Michigan

Back in the class of 2023, Ohio State’s starting left guard was a top 100 player being recruited by Michigan as well as the Buckeyes.

“Thank goodness I didn’t go there — just with what’s going on in the past few years,” Montgomery said, via Cleveland.com. “I think they did a great job recruiting me, I wish all of them the best, everyone on that staff and stuff like that. I hope some of them find the lord and can come back and be with the people they love and stuff like that.”

Quite the statement from Montgomery there, who didn’t give out a bunch of trash talk like the rival teams normally do. It’s worth adding that the staff at Michigan who recruited Montgomery is no longer there and there have been two new head coaches since.

Ohio State will welcome Michigan into Columbus this time around come November. Ryan Day will try to build a winning streak against the Wolverines, one thing he’s been unable to do in his seven seasons at the helm.

It’s only spring ball and we’ll hear plenty more from both sides, but Montgomery’s comment is really the first “talk” from either Michigan or Ohio State from this year’s teams.
