When you have a good coaching staff, you are at risk of having turnover each and every season. That is no different for the Ohio State Buckeyes, who now have a decent worry on their plate.

While the Buckeyes are preparing for their first-round game in the College Football Playoff against the Tennessee Volunteers, an interesting report has surfaced.

According to Chris Anderson of 247 Sports, Ohio State assistant offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Brian Hartline has interviewed for the head coaching job at West Virginia.

The Mountaineers moved on from Neal Brown following the end of their regular season and are now in search of their new head coach. It appears that West Virginia is interested in Hartline, who is regarded as one of the best offensive assistants in college football.

Under Hartline’s leadership at the wide receiver position, Ohio State has become the premier school for churning out NFL talent. No other school recruits the wide receiver position like Ohio State and that is a testament to the work of Hartline.

Hartline has been at Ohio State since 2017 where he started as an offensive quality control assistant. From 2018 until 2022, Hartline held the position of wide receivers coach. In 2023, Hartline was the offensive coordinator while Ryan Day called plays, and now he is the assistant offensive coordinator alongside Chip Kelly. Hartline still coaches wide receivers as well.

Jeremiah Smith has had a breakout season as a freshman in Columbus with 934 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. That is the latest body of work that Hartline has to show and another reason he could be poised to stay in Columbus. A player like Smith does not come along all that often.

Hartline has been rumored for some jobs in the past but has remained in Columbus. Hartline is making $1.6 million this season and that contract will run through the 2025 season. With the former Buckeye standout receiving more head coaching interest, Ohio State may be forced to up his pay if they want to keep him around.

It is still early in the process, but it appears that Hartline has a real interest in the West Virginia job. Ohio State has their focus on the Vols, but this is a worry worth watching as well.
